Bank Statement Conversion Guide (US & India)
Banks don’t format statements the same way. Some PDFs are easy to convert. Others are password-protected, scanned, or have extra pages, like cheque images, that confuse basic converters.
This page is a quick guide for downloading and converting statements from common banks in the US and India.
If you already have the statement PDF and only need conversion, start here:
Before you download: Two things to watch for
1) Password-protected PDFs
Some banks protect statements with a password, like a date of birth pattern or part of the account number. If your PDF asks for a password to open, you’ll need to enter it during conversion if supported, or unlock the PDF first.
You can use our free unlock tool if you’re authorized to unlock the statement:
2) Extra pages at the end of the statement
Some banks add cheque images, marketing pages, or terms and conditions. If your converter sees those pages as transactions, your Excel will look messy. The best approach is to convert only the pages with the transaction table.
US Banks
Chase Bank (Chase.com)
-
Log in to your Chase account.
-
Go to Statements and Documents.
-
Choose your account and the statement period.
-
Download the statement as a PDF.
Common note: Chase statements sometimes include cheque images or extra pages at the end. If your conversion output looks messy with random lines after the transaction table, it’s likely those extra pages.
Bank of America (BoA)
-
Log in to Online Banking.
-
Open the relevant account.
-
Go to Statements & Documents.
-
Select the statement period and download the PDF.
Common note: BoA statements are often downloadable PDFs with selectable text that usually convert more cleanly than scanned PDFs.
Wells Fargo
-
Sign on to Wells Fargo Online.
-
Go to Statements and Documents.
-
Select Statements.
-
Choose the account and period.
-
Download the PDF.
Indian Banks
State Bank of India (SBI)
SBI statements are often password-protected, depending on how they were generated or downloaded.
-
Navigate to Account Statement or the equivalent download section.
-
Choose the period and download the statement as a PDF.
If the PDF asks for a password:
- Use your password during conversion if supported, or
- Unlock it first using unlock tool if authorized, then convert.
HDFC Bank
-
Log in to HDFC NetBanking.
-
Go to Enquire.
-
Choose Account Statement and the required range.
-
Select PDF format and download.
Common note: HDFC statements are usually clean and consistent, making them easier to convert.
ICICI Bank
-
Log in to ICICI Internet Banking.
-
Go to Bank Accounts → Account Statement.
-
Choose the period.
-
Download the statement as PDF.
Common note: Some ICICI statements have multi-column layouts or long wrapped descriptions. If your rows split or columns shift, use the troubleshooting guide.
Convert the PDF to Excel/CSV (Universal Steps)
Once you have the PDF:
-
Open the how to convert bank statement to Excel and follow the method for your PDF type (downloaded or scanned).
-
If you’re importing into accounting software, use the import guide
-
Before importing, do a quick validation:
- Spot-check a few rows against the PDF.
- If your statement has a balance column, confirm the ending balance matches.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did my conversion include cheque images or extra pages?
Some banks add images or terms pages. Convert only the pages containing the transaction table or use a converter focused on statements that ignores non-transaction pages.
My PDF asks for a password. What should I do?
If you’re authorized and you have the password, enter it during conversion if supported, or unlock the PDF first using our free unlock PDF tool.
What if my Excel output has split rows or wrong debit/credit?
That’s usually a layout or conversion issue. Start here.
Key takeaway
Most conversion problems come from two things: password-protected PDFs and statement layouts (scans, multi-column tables, wrapped descriptions). Download the cleanest PDF you can, then validate a few rows before you import.
